HELPFUL TIPS
![]() PRIMED FOR PAINTING
Using a primer first can save you money and headaches. A primer will help smooth and seal the surface for
better paint adhesion. It will also give you truer colour and you'll use less paint if your primer is tinted a shade
similar to the final coat.
![]() HOW TO USE A BRUSH
Select the right brush for the type of paint you're using - synthetic bristles for latex, natural for oil-based. Use a
brush for detail work such as painting around woodwork, windows, in corners and at the top and bottom of
walls. Dip a third of the bristles into the paint and remove the excess by tapping, not swiping, the bristles
against the rim of the paint can. Use short strokes to apply the paint.
HOW TO USE A ROLLER
Use a large roller to cover walls quickly and a trim roller for woodwork and cabinets. Load roller evenly with
paint from a tray and be sure to saturate the nap. Using mild pressure, layer paint on the surface in two
directions. Always start in an uncoated spot and roll toward a painted area. For walls, roll a big M or N and fill
in with crosswise strokes. Once the paint dries, the surface should appear uniformly even. Run the roller over
the edges you painted with a brush to smooth out the texture. This works best when painted edges are still
wet.
